Please note, these examples of personal stories are composites to illustrate common situations while maintaining confidentiality.
I once met with a woman in her early sixties. Recently retired, she felt she was doing everything right, seeing a herbalist, adopting a vegetarian diet, even describing herself as having “nice life” with close family and a wonderful childhood. Still, self criticism was not far from her mind, I have “no right to be moaning or whining about anything at all” she protested.
Extreme tiredness, a loss of interest and pleasure in things which she used to enjoy was “pathetic and silly” she said. Yet this was the case, her appetite was low, her sleep was broken and not restful. Her low sex drive had driven her to seek help, more for her husband than herself since she knew this was hurting him. Without this push she said she really wouldn’t have thought to come.
Depression is one of the most common reasons why a person will seek psychotherapy and counselling, although their own perception of the issue often varies. It is different to sadness and can be complex and confusing for the client. Its effects are felt by their family, friends, co-workers and employers. Whilst often daunting, it is treatable and current NHS clinical guidelines recommend antidepressants combined with talking therapies.
At BodyMindTherapy Clinic we first conduct a comprehensive psychodynamic assessment. Depending on the your needs we may use CBT and Mindfulness, or Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing as part of the therapy process. Our way of working acknowledges the powerful connection between body and mind. Depression can manifest itself in physical symptoms, so our treatment also acknowledges the body. Our holistic therapy can combine conventional counseling and talking therapies with profound massage and yoga therapies. We offer these services with minimal or no waiting times so you get the help you need when you need it.
If you are considering speaking with a professional therapist about depression or any other issue you think could be affecting or a loved one, you are welcome to reach out to BodyMindTherapy Clinic at any time. We are attentive to your needs and will tailor our approach to ensure you receive the most appropriate treatment for you.
